.----------------------------------------------------------------------------- .paragraphtitle Students

New students should send an audition tape with approximately 15 minutes of music of different styles before April 30th. Each student will receive two 40-minute lessons. The class is open to all repertoire, but we do ask that you let us know which pieces you plan to play.

There are only a limited number of spaces for performing students. If you are not accepted to play in the Masterclass, you can still audit the class and take private lessons with Mr. Barrueco's assistant. Please let us know by checking the appropriate box if you want that option.

We offer less advanced students the opportunity to audit the Masterclass and take private lessons from Mr. Barrueco's assistant. You do not have to send an audition tape, but do give us a good description of your level of playing and what music you would like to play.

.----------------------------------------------------------------------------- .paragraphtitle How to get the most out of the Barrueco Masterclass

By Asgerdur Sigurdardottir and Risa Carlson

Masterclasses are concentrated learning experiences. Whether you are a beginner or advanced, a performer or an auditor, you will probably feel like there is a lot of information and not enough time to absorb it. However, there are some strategies that can help you get the most out of the Barrueco Masterclass.

The most important things to remember are: .subparagraphtitle Play things you know well!

Play things you know well and by memory if at all possible. If you are well prepared, you are more likely to get more out of the lesson and be less nervous. One thing: Don't play your own compositions without consulting the teacher first. .subparagraphtitle Listen well!

Genuine listening is a difficult skill that requires patience, openness, and the desire to understand. The teacher may present you with ideas, skills, and techniques that are completely new and may even contradict what you have learned previously. Do consult the teacher about any conflicting information you may have, but don't waste time arguing over a point endlessly. Remember, you may end up agreeing later, upon further reflection. Be open minded and try out the teacher's suggestions. .subparagraphtitle Be honest!

We all know how hard it can be to be critiqued on one's performance in front of other people, but resist the urge to make excuses. Also, don't exaggerate your abilities or practice habits to the teacher, because he won't be able to assess accurately the progress you should be getting out of your practicing efforts. If the teacher asks you if you practice in a certain way, don't say that you do if you don't. Remember that he can help you better if you are open and honest. There are no shortcuts to learning how to play your best! .subparagraphtitle What if I get really nervous when I perform?

Everyone has experienced nervousness when performing, especially in a masterclass. Remember that you are surrounded by people who want to learn and teachers who want you to succeed, so try not to be overly self-conscious about your mistakes. An "inner critic" berating you for your mistakes will just get in the way of your learning experience. It will help to be as prepared as you can possibly be. Talk to the teacher about nerves and how to deal with them if you tend to get overly nervous when performing.
